A serious accident Tuesday afternoon in northwest Sioux Falls sent multiple people to the hospital. Police are still investigating, but think they have a primary cause for the crash.

Sioux Falls Police Department Information Officer Sam Clemens said the event occurred about 2:15 PM at the intersection of Benson and Westport as a 2004 Suzuki Aerio driven by a 39-year old man going south and a 2008 Toyota Sequoia heading east driven by a 41-year old woman who are both from Sioux Falls.

“The initial thought is that there is probably red light violation. We’ve got officers that are reconstructing (the accident scene) and there were some witnesses and we’re talking to people involved to get witness statements to determine what happened.”

Clemens revealed that most of the injury victims were in the Suzuki including a 56-year old man who suffered broken legs, a collapsed lung and swelling on the brain which were considered life-threatening injuries and was still hospitalized at last report. A 51-year old woman who was also a passenger in the Suzuki was ejected from the vehicle, but only received minor injuries.

Others had various but less severe wounds to either their head, back or legs with all of them getting treated as a hospital. Police have yet to issue a citation in this incident.
