A Mitchell woman who was shot by a police officer over the weekend has died of her injuries.

Attorney General Marty Jackley says 52-year-old Joy Ann Sherman died Monday at a Sioux Falls hospital. She was shot by a Mitchall police sergeant after officers were called to a motel and a report of intoxicated woman.

Sherman was armed and was considered to be a danger to herself and others and Jackley said the situation escalated after police arrived resulting in the shooting.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the shooting at the request of Mitchell Police.
