MINOT, ND — No. 13 Augustana couldn’t overcome Carly Boag and Minot State on Saturday, losing 88-71 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.  The Vikings fell to 8-4 (4-4 NSIC) on the year.  With the win, the Beavers improved to 9-3 (5-3 NSIC).

Boag, the NSIC’s leading scorer entering Saturday, finished the game with a season-high 32 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the win.  Morgan Klose also scored 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting for Minot State, who notched their first win ever against Augustana with the victory.

The Vikings’ Rhianna Gullickson tallied a career-high 24 points and five rebounds in the loss.  Riley Nordgaard matched her career-high with 20 points in just 24 minutes of action due to foul trouble in the first half.

The 88 points given up by Augustana were a new season high.  The Vikings struggled to find their shot, going 28 for 81 (34.6 percent), while the Beavers shot 31 for 65 (47.7 percent) for the game.

Augustana got things going fast, jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead with Nordgaard scoring five quick points for the Vikings.  Minot State responded with an 8-0 run of its own to take its first lead of the game at 10-9 before Gullickson ended the run with a 3-pointer.

Gullickson exploded in the first 10 minutes of the half, scoring 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting.  The Alexandria, S.D. native’s success was part of some great early ball movement by the Vikings that resulted in six assists on their first eight made shots.

But Boag became a problem that couldn’t be solved, using her size to muscle her way to a quick 10 points in the post, giving Minot State a 25-21 lead with 9:30 left in the first half.

The Beavers pushed their lead to 13 on an Alisha Jones three at the 4:35 mark in the first half.  It was the part of a Minot State offense that went 5 for 10 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play.

Emily Schulte would come up with a nice steal at the end of the half, getting fouled on the way up.  The senior converted one of two from the foul line, cutting the Beavers’ lead to 42-31.

Minot State would counter by going the full length of the court and scoring on a Klose basket to end the half, putting the Beavers up 44-31 at the break.

Minot State’s size and zone defense gave Augustana fits in the in the first half.  The Vikings just couldn’t get into the paint and put up 21 3-pointers, making only four, in the half.

Augustana struggled to make a shot in the first half, going 12 for 40 (30 percent) while Minot State connected on 16 for 34 (47.1 percent) from the field.

Minot State held a 29-20 rebounding advantage at halftime.

The Gullickson-Boag matchup was really something to watch in the first half, with Boag recording 16 points and grabbing eight rebounds, while Gullickson had 12 points and four rebounds.

In the second half, the Beavers used a 10-3 run to take a 56-36 lead early in the half.  The Vikings responded with a 9-0 run of their own, triggered by two quick Schulte threes, cutting Minot State’s lead to 11 at 56-45.

The Beavers would put the game out of reach with a 7-0 run to take an 81-62 lead with 5:23 remaining in the game on Jones’ 3-pointer.

Augustana couldn’t get closer than 16 points after that, losing 88-71.

Augustana returns home to face NSIC foes Bemidji State and Minnesota-Crookston Jan.10-11 at the Elmen Center.
