The South Dakota Democratic Party and its partners in the labor community will kick off the petition drive for an initiated measure to raise the minimum wage this Labor Day in Sioux Falls. The event will be held from noon to 2pm at Elmwood Park.

Members of the minimum wage campaign will speak at the event and gather signatures for the initiated measure.

The goal is to raise South Dakota's minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $8.50 per hour plus with annual cost of living increases. The 15,855 signatures from registered voters need to be submitted to the Secretary of State by November 4, 2013. If enough signatures are gathered, then South Dakota voters will vote on the initiated measure during the 2014 general election.
