Medical Debt Can Be Toxic
According to an article in the latest New England Journal of Medicine, medical debt has been found to be unhealthy and even “toxic.”
ABC News had a story about doctors at Duke University doing an opinion piece on how medical debt affects people and their health.
Researchers concluded that physicians everywhere need to do a better job of discussing treatment options with their patients – especially when it comes to potential costs.
According to the ABC News story, by not making expenses a part of the conversation, the conclusion was made that doctors may be exposing their patients to financial trouble that could eventually lead to further health struggles – even if they have health insurance.
On a related note, statistics show nearly two-thirds of the personal bankruptcy filings in the United States are due to unpaid bills.
