Assistant Police Chief Matt Burns has been named the new Chief of the Sioux Falls Police Department. Current Chief Doug Barthel will retire in October after a nearly 30-year career with the department.

Burns' appointment as Police Chief is subject to the advice and consent of the City Council, and his estimated stat date as Chief is October 19. Decisions about the Assistant Police Chief position will be considered in the future.

Burns began his career with the Sioux Falls Police Department in July 1996, serving a number of positions.
