Crews are gearing up to resume levee work in Sioux Falls.

Tom Berkland of the Public Works Engineering Division says work will start on February 26 to remove eight drainage structures through the levees on the Big Sioux river near West 12th Street.

The bike trail in that area will be affected, so expect to see detours around the work areas. But city officials say you should avoid trespassing on private property off the trail route.

The project, the last phase of improvements to the levees, will allow FEMA to begin the process of revising the Flood Insurance Rate Maps, which will involve removal of properties adjacent to the levees from the flood plain.

The work affecting the bike trail is scheduled for completion in early June, and the entire project is to be completed by mid-July.
