SIOUX FALLS, SD — Head coach Dave Krauth became the 20th coach in Division II women’s basketball history on Saturday with 500 career wins in an 86-82 Augustana win over No. 12 Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.  The No. 10 Vikings improved their record to 7-2 (3-2 NSIC).  The Mavericks’ loss dropped them to 6-3 (3-2 NSIC).

The Mavericks would continue to stay in the game with great shooting early by Wilkinson and Schreber.  The two scored 16 of Minnesota State’s first 29 points, going a combined seven for nine (77.8 percent) in the process.  The Mavericks’ solid ball movement resulted in 11 assists on their first 14 made shots.

The Vikings would break a five-minute scoreless streak on a Ashley 3-pointer at 11:20.  Ashley’s three cut the Mavericks lead to four at 58-54.

Augustana would fight its way back into the game, by breaking away from its style in the first half of firing from deep and instead going aggressively to the rim, getting the Mavericks into foul trouble and providing the Vikings opportunities to close the gap while not wasting time off the clock.

Augustana would use a 10-5 run to close the game to within two, 68-66 in favor of Minnesota State with 5:09 left.  All 10 points came from the free-throw line for Vikings.

Riley Nordgaard would provide a major spark for Augustana after missing time after taking a hard foul.  Nordgaard would come in at the 5:05 mark and the sophomore’s grit-and-grind style of play would provide huge dividends, triggering a 12-4 run for the Vikings, putting them up 78-72 with 1:46 remaining.  The Canby, Minn. native scored five of her 12 points during the run.

The Mavericks would make one final push, on a Wilkinson 3-pointer with 28 seconds remaining, cutting Augustana’s lead to three at 83-80.  Minnesota State would be forced into fouling to prolong the game, but the Vikings would convert, winning 86-82.

Augustana plays its final game of 2013 against Wayne State on Saturday, Dec. 21.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Elmen Center.
