Kelly Clarkson Gets Emotional Over ‘Voice’ Contestant’s ‘Piece by Piece’ Cover, Coming Out Story
After 27-year-old Texas native Stephanie Rice sang Clarkson's ballad, "Piece by Piece," and unveiled the story of how she was disowned by her parents after coming out to them and was forced to leave her home at the age of 18, Clarkson, who herself rose to fame after participating in a televised singing competition, used Twitter to express her overwhelming feelings about the cover.
"Can't. Stop. Crying," the pop-rocker wrote. "Her vulnerability and her story ....just wow. Steph, I hope ur parents open their hearts 2 the beautiful person u r!"
Rice's performance not only impressed Clarkson, however. Two of the coaches, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, turned their chairs for her, while Adam Levine and Alicia Keys were also both clearly affected by the folksy singer-songwriter's soul-searching rendition and personal story of struggle.
Ultimately, Rice chose to be on Team Gwen, who told the burgeoning star, "I was really moved by you. I could feel whatever pain is in there. There’s music as an outlet for you. You can only sing like that if you’ve lived it. Sometimes on this show I get really emotional because I feel like I’m here for a reason, and right now I feel like I’m here to work with you."
