Kayla Nevarez brought both soul and swagger to ‘The Voice’ tonight (Oct. 1) with a show-stopping performance of Estelle’s ‘American Boy.’ The 17-year-old's blind audition impressed Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green so much that two of the judges wound up fighting for her – but whose team did she choose in the end?

“You have a smooth quality, an effortless quality, about your voice,” Aguilera commented, going on to exclaim, “I want you on my team! I have to have you on my team!” Cee Lo chimed in with, “Dang … I was really impressed,” and praised her for having such amazing confidence and poise. Levine then impatiently jumped in with his own thoughts on the young singer's potential, making it clear that he would stop at nothing to have her on his team. “I’m not trying to play dirty, but my team did win ‘The Voice’ once,” Levine reminded her.

It honestly seemed that Aguilera had this one in the bag, no contest. After all, Nevarez admitted to being influenced by Aguilera’s music growing up. But in the end, she joined Team Adam, making him the first judge to complete his team.

Nevarez inherited her passion for music – particularly her love for soul, R&B and blues – from her father, who is currently battling liver disease. As a result of his sickness, her family is struggling just to make ends meet, and seven people are crammed into a two-bedroom apartment. “I get through it all by singing and music,” Nevarez said. “I really want to help provide for my family … I want to make them proud.”

With her talent and ambition, along with Levine's self-proclaimed "psychotic" drive and dedication, it's safe to say that she has more than a shot at success.
