Justin Timberlake’s New Song ‘Take Back the Night’ Steps on the Legal Toes of an Anti-Rape Group

Justin Timberlake recently released his new song,’Take Back the Night’ — but apparently no one thought to tell him that a pretty well-known sexual assault awareness group by that name already exists.

The song itself is full of sexual content, prompting anti-sexual abuse and domestic violence group Take Back the Night to send a letter to Justin’s lawyer about copyright infringement.

“They claimed he’d never heard of us before he wrote that song. I don’t know what country he’s been in,” executive director Katie Koestner said upon hearing back from Timberlake’s legal team. “It’s a big song, and he didn’t take the necessary steps to make sure that it was appropriate.”

“The lyrics are definitely very sexual and not at all clearly anti-sexual violence. ‘Use me,’ for example, is not a great phrase for anyone affiliated with [this] organization.”

The line in particular she’s referring to goes a little something like this: “Come on, use me up until there’s nothing left / Take back the night / Dizzy, spinning, sweating, you can’t catch your breath / Take back the night”

Justin, meanwhile, issued an official statement to Radar Online apologizing for his faux pas.

Upon the release of my new single ‘Take Back The Night’, I was made aware of an organization of the same name called The Take Back The Night Foundation. I wanted to take this opportunity to let all know that neither my song nor its lyrics have any association with the organization.

As I’ve learned more about The Take Back The Night Foundation, I’m moved by its efforts to stop violence against women, create safe communities and encourage respectful relationships for women — something we all should rally around.

It is my hope that this coincidence will bring more awareness to this cause.

For its part, Take Back the Night said this is an “unfortunate” incident and the people there are “hoping it can be amicably resolved.”
