Both Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep were up for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical at the 2013 Golden Globes. And when Lawrence won, she bounded on stage and exclaimed, "I beat Meryl!"

She was quoting a line directly from the movie 'First Wives Club,' but those who didn't know that (including Lindsay Lohan) went on the attack.

Lindsay, who was live-tweeting the Globes on Sunday night because yes, it's come to that, wrote:

That's a whole lotta shade for someone with a full legal calendar to be throwing, but J. Law nevertheless felt the need to explain the joke and the movie scene that inspired it when she stopped by 'The Late Show With David Letterman' on Tuesday night.

"Bette Midler was talking about a globe," Jennifer said. "I can't believe nobody's ever done it before. She said, 'Look what it says: I Beat Meryl.' It was so perfect.”

"I had no idea Lindsay Lohan was going to take it to the Twitterverse -- is that what it's called?" she adorably asked because she's adorable. "I'm not on Twitter. But Twitter is very upset ... I wanted to make a public statement, like, 'Hey idiots, it's a quote from a movie.'"

Lawrence added she'd never purposefully insult Streep (who was at home with the flu during the award show) and then told an anecdote about staring at the zillion-time Oscar winner all stalker-like when she was once in the room with her.

So anyway, back to the Streep joke. In case it wasn't clear -- hey idiots, it's a quote from a movie.

And here's the proof:
