Over the years, South Dakota has experienced the highs and lows of national polls.

In 1992, Money Magazine voted the state's largest city, Sioux Falls, the 'Top Place To Live in America', while South Dakota has routinely been ranked at, or near the bottom, of teachers' salaries in the USA.

Now a new national ranking has South Dakota dead last, only this time it's for our food options, or lack thereof.

The website Thrillist.com has rated 'Every State In The USA, Ranked By Its Food/Drink', and South Dakota is number 50.

According to Thrillist:

When you Google "South Dakota and food", an image of a hungry child crying comes up, and then the computer goes black.

Ouch!

Just how did Thrillist judge each state? The site claims they considered four questions when bestowing their rankings:

1) What did they produce (beef, oranges, ugh, sorghum?)

2) What iconic items were they known for (key lime pie? onion burgers?)

3) What is their beer/wine/spirits production like (great breweries/wineries?)

4) What is the food/drink scene like in their cities?

So how did the rest of our region fare?

Well, before our neighbors to the North get too smug, here's what Thrillist said about North Dakota (#49):

This could have been at 50. We flipped a coin.

Iowa wasn't very far away at number 47:

Their most iconic food is meat that a person was too lazy to pack together.

Just a few stops away at 43 was Nebraska:

Your football team is named after corn preparation. So that’s something?

The only state in the Upper Midwest to crack the Top 25? Minnesota at 23:

Surly’s was at the forefront of a damn fine brewing scene, but really this ranking is about the glorious innovation that is the Juicy Lucy. Any chump can melt cheese ON a burger, but it takes vision to put it INSIDE the burger. For such achievements you get a pass on that suspect-looking hot dish stuff.

So where is the #1 state for food in the USA?

Not surprisingly, California. But not without one more South Dakota reference:

We didn’t want it to be California, friends. We wanted it to be some kind of off-the-radar spot like South Dakota or Texas.

So did Thrillist nail this one or are there some hidden gems in South Dakota they overlooked?
