How much can farm land be worth? With the grain prices down, input costs up and the price of farm machinery, it's hard to make the math work before even getting to land prices.

If you own land, you are setting on something very precious. It would be hard to let go of it at any price.

Farm land sales in the spring are somewhat uncommon. With planting in full swing, it's just not the time to sell.

But sales do happen, and here's one to tell you about. On May 4, 2016, 174 acres of land West of Ackley, Iowa sold for $1.427 million. That equates to $8200 an acre.

According to Iowa State University, the average price paid for farmland in Hardin County in Iowa last year was $8,438 an acre.
