It was not just another Monday. A South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper injured during a January standoff in Brule County has returned to his appointed post.

In a press release from the Department of Public Safety, it was announced that Sgt. John Koenig, a 28-year veteran of the Patrol, returned to full duty. He is stationed in Chamberlain.

“It is good to have Sgt. Koenig back,” said Col. Craig Price, superintendent of the Highway Patrol.  “Along with John and his family, we are thankful that he has been able to return to full duty.”

It was a bitter cold day on January 7 when officers converged on a residence near Kimball. When Koenig responded to a report of an individual threatening law enforcement officers, he was shot and was subsequently hospitalized. The stalemate lasted almost 24 hours with numerous law enforcement agencies involved.

Michael London left the home early in the proceedings while Donald London held police at bay for the duration. The two men face criminal charges with more court proceedings pending.
