Each one of us is unique. Go no farther than your fingerprint to find the evidence. Isn’t it funny how tough it is to embrace the different.

What prompts these words is the failed measure in the South Dakota Legislature HB1195. The emphasis of this bill would have voided the Activities Association policy to establish a determinant in identifying a student's sexual identity for the purpose of participation in high school athletics.

It passed the House, but failed in the Senate. So the rule remains in place. Sponsor Jim Bolin said the emphasis was that a minor should not be allowed to redefine their sexual identity.  I’m not here to condemn or support this idea. It’s just a starting point for conversation.

By an overwhelming majority, people have no trouble identifying who they are as man or woman. That makes it logical that those who struggle with the redefinition of their gender are well outside the normal.

I see these people occasionally. They are different. I don’t want to say I stare, but I sometimes examine what I’m seeing. I don’t hate them. I don’t know them. If they had a question, I would help them find the answer.

It is said that each one of us has our own hell on earth that we endure to some degree in our lives. Please try to remember that when you encounter someone who seems different, they may be just like you.
