We all knew it was too good to be true, but we wanted to believe! Last week, a video was all over the interwebs showing many celebrities using a hoverboard like in the 'Back to the Future' movies. Tony Hawk, Moby, Terrell Owens and Dr. Emmet Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd, all helped promote the new product from a company called HUVrTech.

Even though we all wanted to have the technology of the future under our feet, a lot of us could sense something was amiss. The thing we didn't know was why this ploy was pulled on us. Many speculated that it may have been for a new 'Back to the Future' movie or for a new Tony Hawk video game.

It turned out that it was all a prank put on by the people at Funny or Die.

Hawk apologized for pranking us all and had this to say about the video:

I was recently invited to participate in a prank video "revealing" the reality of hoverboards. It seemed harmless and fun, but the video spread and it was wildly misleading. This was not a promotion for a new movie or videogame, nor did I get paid (unrelated: I am releasing a game for mobile devices relatively soon). My reward was riding in a DeLorean with Doc, and pretending to be a stuntman for BTTF2. - Tony

Funny or Die and Christopher Lloyd put out their own follow-up video to apologize for misleading us and getting all of our science nerd hopes up.

With the video Funny or Die also said:

Funny Or Die recently teamed up with a group of celebrities for an elaborate prank to convince the world hoverboards were real and that a company called HUVr Tech had invented them. Sadly, we were lying. The great promise of Back to the Future II has not been fulfilled ... yet. And for that, we truly are sorry.

They also say that if you go to their Facebook page, you could win your own (non-functional) hoverboard signed by all the people in the video.
