A late Friday afternoon playground fire did a whole lot of damage prior to the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Hawthorne Elementary also took a hit.

Sioux Falls Police released the damage estimate during it’s regular police briefing Tuesday after the holiday. The loss sustained in total is approximately $39,000.

The blaze completely destroyed the playground equipment and Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens says it came at a cost of about $15,000. Because of the play structure’s close proximity to the building, four windows were damaged at a cost $4,000 combined and the building will take $20,000 to fix.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause.

“It may have been a kid that was playing with matches or a lighter,” said Clemens. “At this point we haven’t been able to figure out who is responsible for starting this fire.”
