The Ground Works-Midwest organization has received a financial award from Avera Health Systems in Sioux Falls.

The award will help fund GWM’s YES! (youth eating smart) Summer School Day Camps being held in the teaching gardens within the GWM network of schools.  Staff members from Avera Health Systems will be in attendance at the YES! Summer School Day Camp on Wednesday, July 22, 2015  at the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum east of Sioux Falls at 1900 East Perry Place to present GWM with the cash award and interact with the students and teachers at the YES! Summer School Day Camp.

YES! Summer School Day Camp will be at the Teaching Garden Demonstration is for students ages 8-10. There are 25 students attending the camp including 10 from the Bowden Youth Center.

The camp will focus on increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables by cooking and eating right from the teaching garden beds.  Holly Swee, Director of Nutrition & Consumer Information, South Dakota Beef Industry Council will be cooking at the camp and incorporating lean beef into the camp lessons.  The students will also be working with solar ovens and learning how to cook with them and finally constructing their own solar oven.
