PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has awarded about $1.5 million in federal grants to recreational trail projects throughout the state.

The federal assistance program provides up to 80 percent reimbursement for trail development and maintenance projects.

Grants were awarded for trail construction and upgrades in Aberdeen, Belle Fourche, Custer, Deadwood, Dell Rapids, Lake County, Murdo, Watertown and Winner. Additional grants were awarded for trail improvement projects at Blood Run Nature Area, the George S. Mickelson Trail in the Black Hills, LaFramboise Island Nature Area near Pierre, the Black Hills snowmobile trail system and the Black Hills National Forest off-highway vehicle trail system.

The federally funded program is administered by the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department. The money comes from motor fuel taxes collected from non-highway recreational use.
