Gold Mine Permit Decision in SD Delayed

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) – It likely will be more than a year before Lawrence County commissioners decide whether to grant a permit for a proposed gold mine near Spearfish Canyon in South Dakota’s Black Hills.

The commission decided Tuesday after five hours of testimony from people on both sides of the issue to wait for a report from the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The state review is expected to take at least 14 months.

The proposed Deadwood Standard Project is opposed by environmentalists and homeowners in the area of the scenic canyon. Supporters of the project say it would create jobs and boost the economy.
