A short but nasty hailstorm dropped a ton of hail on U.S. Highway 16 in the Black Hills on Tuesday night. There was so much hail that snow plows were called out to move the hail.

Law enforcement reported the hail being six inches deep in spots.

The main area affected was on Highway 16 from Beretta Road to Rockerville.

I lived in Rapid City when I bought my first car on my own and had to get car insurance. When I got the quote I thought it seemed a little expensive. I called my mom, who was an insurance agent, and asked her if I was getting screwed. She said I wasn't and that it was because I was living in what is known as "hail alley," an area of the country that gets more hail than average. It stretches from Wyoming all the way to north Texas.
