During his years excelling for Washington High School, Nate Gerry turned plenty of heads with his spectacular play on both sides of the football, with enough talent to have the Nebraska Cornhuskers come calling for a spot on their roster.

Now in his first fall camp in Lincoln, Gerry is impressing a whole new set of people.

The Omaha World-Herald says Gerry is proving his value at a number of defensive positions for Nebraska, from linebacker, to cornerback, to safety.

Head Coach Bo Pelini:

He can do a lot of different things to help our football team.

The 6-foot-2, 210 pound, freshman is listed as a linebacker now, but he's also seen time at the dime back position, an inside cornerback spot when Nebraska puts six defensive backs on the field.

One of Gerry's strengths is speed.  He holds the South Dakota high school 100 meter record (10.3).

It isn't just the Nebraska coaches singing Gerry's praises.  Senior cornerback, and team captain, Ciante Evans says he's impressed by Gerry's mental approach to the game:

He always has that ability-to-learn mindset.

He always wants to learn.

He always wants to study.

He's willing to put in extra time, and with a young guy you can't really teach that.

Gerry and the Huskers open the 2013 season August 31st, when they host Wyoming in Lincoln.
