Former Mitchell Boys Basketball Coach Gary Munsen Receives National Award

Former Mitchell High School boys basketball Coach Gary Munsen was named the Boys Basketball Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association at a banquet Wednesday night in Des Moines.

Munsen was nominated by the South Dakota High School Coaches Association.

Munsen's basketball coaching career highlights 39 years at Mitchell, while coaching for 42 total years in basketball. Munsen won nine titles at Mitchell, including three in a row from 1984 to 1986. His Kernals from 1984 to 1986 also won 40 straight games.

Munsen is 672-254 all-time as a varsity basketball head coach.

Munsen retired after the 2011-2012 season, and is a member of the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame.
