On Monday (May 1) the state of South Dakota will honor one of their own who served its citizens. By order of Governor Dennis Daugaard, flags at the State Capitol will fly at half-staff in honor of former legislator Richard “Dick” Gregerson of Sioux Falls.

Gregerson's life included school in Sioux Falls and an expansive military, education and federal government background according to his obituary:

After earning his law degree, Dick joined the FBI as a special agent. His service with the FBI took him to the South during the Civil Rights Movement. In 1962, he was part of the security detail that guarded James Meredith, the first black student to enroll in the University of Mississippi

Gregerson, 84, also was a representative in the state Senate from 1979 to 1982, and served on the state Transportation Commission. He died on April 25.
