I'm needing some advice. A friend of mine claims you can cover up wood stains and scratches simply by rubbing the spot with white toothpaste. Is this true?

We have a couple of window sills in our basement where the kids (when they were young) put down a glass of water without using a coaster, and as a result caused some staining.

And I have tried EVERYTHING trying to cover up those stains. I'm pretty sure I've dropped upwards of $5,000 (maybe a bit of an exaggeration) on various remedies.

I'm really hoping the white toothpaste does the trick. This same friend also told me you don't want to rub the toothpaste too hard because it can remove the surrounding finish.

So - this is where you come in. Have you, or maybe someone you know, ever tried the white toothpaste trick? If so, I would love to hear from you.

I'm having a hard time believing something as simple as white toothpaste would do the trick. And how come I'm just now hearing about this "secret ingredient"?
