Sioux Falls residents and visitors will see construction begin on the indoor aquatic center at Spellerberg Park this week. The installation of the site fence has begun with placement of building stakes and relocation of some trees soon to come.

Construction equipment will move in the week of April 13, and site clearing, excavation work, and grading will start the week of April 20. There's a video below to see more of what is currently being done.

“We are excited to see construction begin on this long-anticipated, much-needed project for our community,” says Don Kearney, Director of Parks and Recreation. “This new facility is one that will make our city and region very proud.”

The city’s first indoor aquatic center will include a large recreation pool area with play features and water slide, a therapy pool, a 50-meter pool, multipurpose rooms, sun decks, concession areas, and more. The facility will provide opportunities for the entire family, including leisure and lap swimming, swim lessons, warm-water therapy, fitness classes, water safety training, and diving.

Spellerberg Park also will receive a facelift during the project. The park site plan includes the relocation of the tennis courts and sand volleyball courts. Kearney says the picnic and playground area, much of the green space, the walkways and the sledding hill in the park will be retained and enhanced. "They can still use the balance of the park that's not fenced off. Safety is a concern so that nobody gets hurt. If you need to use the shelter or playground, that's still available throughout this summer."

The construction schedule includes enclosing the building by this coming winter, and the facility will open in the fall of 2016. Most of the park improvements will take place during the summer of 2016.
