Why is it that we throw out thousands of dollars worth of food each year?  Blame the expiration date on the containers.

If you're a conscious and practical consumer you'll look at those labels closer and use the product quicker.  And save money too.  But do you really need to rush?

In a report from ABC News, food experts at the National Food lab say don't be so quick to trash your food because of the date.  “I don’t think we can really pinpoint a single food safety incident that happened because a food product was past its date,” said Jena Roberts, vice president of business development at the National Food Lab.

Federal law states that infant formula is the only food that requires an expiration date.  All others are voluntary.

I know what you're thinking.  A gallon of milk is one thing.  But a can of Spam?
