It’s the same solution for different problems as city crews need to fix traffic signal problems. On consecutive days in downtown Sioux Falls traffic signals go dark.

Tuesday, April 7 at Sixth and Minnesota a lighting strike damaged the signal cabinet. As a result, the signals went dark and traffic was stacked up during the middle to late stages of the afternoon. The problem was fixed prior to 7:00 PM Tuesday evening and the signals were working again.

Wednesday April 8 at Fourteenth and Phillips crews were contracted to fix a different traffic signal cabinet. Weather was presumably not a factor in this fix as the city stated via press release that an accident caused the damage.

When the cabinet needs repair the intersection goes dark.  Stop signs are placed at each corner and cars treat the area as if it were a four-way stop.

The work is expected to be completed within twelve hours. Drivers are urged to use caution and reduced speeds while traveling near the construction area and may want to consider alternate routes.
