Additional Information

More than fifty years ago one musical changed theater forever. Now itâs back and mesmerizing audiences once again. From the first note to the final breath, West Side Story soars as the greatest love story of all time and remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever.
The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadwayâs finest and features such classics of the American musical theatre as âSomethingâs Coming,â âTonight,â âAmerica,â âI Feel Prettyâ and âSomewhere.â
Based on Shakespeareâs Romeo & Juliet, West Side Story is set in 1950âs New York City. It follows the doomed love story of two star-crossed lovers from rival gangs â the Jets (a working-class white gang) and the Sharks (first-generation Puerto Ricans). Tony, a member of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. West Side Story has often been credited with changing the entire course of the American musical theatre. TIME Magazine said of the original production âRobbinsâ energetic choreography and Bernsteinâs grand score accentuate the satiric, hard-edged lyrics of Sondheim and Laurentsâ capture of the angry voice of urban youth.â
As the Associated Press says, âWest Side Story remains Broadwayâs best dance-driven musical. Five decades have not dimmed the extraordinary choreography or the score that pulsates throughout.â
