Additional Information

Nearly 300 quilts produced by our members will be on display Saturday October 14 9-5, and Sunday October 15 11-4. Activities scheduled include a challenge quilt display, silent auction, small group displays, luncheon, bed-turning, free demonstrations, “country store,” vendors, door prizes, and more!

South Dakota Humanities scholar Phyllis Schrag is a retired Sioux Falls high school speech, English, and theater teacher. She is a quilter, a business person, an avid reader, an actor, and a public speaker. She will be presenting a “bed-turning” program titled "Every Quilt Tells a Story." In times past, when quilters would get together, they would bring their quilts to show to their friends. With many quilters in one tiny house, there really wasn't a proper place to display all the quilts. Their solution was to lay them out in "layers" on a bed. Each quilter would take her turn telling her quilt’s story: where she sourced her fabric, how much fabric she used, inspiration for her pattern choice, and any challenges she had during the making. Thus, the name "bed turning".

Saturday's program is in conjunction with our luncheon. The luncheon, at 11:30, is $20, and includes Phyllis' bed-turning program. Reservation deadline for the luncheon is October 10, and can be made by messaging us through our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/DakotaPieces. The bed-turning will be at 12:30, and tickets will be available at the door for $3.00. Sunday's bed-turning will be at 1pm, and again, tickets will be $3.00 at the door.

We have demonstrations scheduled throughout the day Saturday and Sunday. Quilt shops and guild members will be highlighting tools, tips, and techniques to add to quilters’ skills and knowledge. We have 13 businesses vending to our guests, ranging from quilt shops to tools and furniture. Plus, over 125 door prizes to give away!
Our 85x85-inch raffle quilt this year is spectacular! It is the complex “Prairie Star” pattern designed by Judy Niemeyer, and intricately pieced and custom quilted by members of our guild. Judy Niemeyer quilts often appraise for more than $2,500! Tickets can be purchased at the show for $2 each, or 3 for $5, and you need not be present to win.

Proceeds from the quilt show and raffle quilt help support our comfort quilt mission. So far this year alone, the guild has distributed over 130 quilts to twenty different service agencies. We are also active in supporting the area’s Quilts of Valor program. We have 175 members from Sioux Falls and surrounding communities in the tri-state area.
