ESPN’s John Clayton on the Minnesota Vikings Selecting Teddy Bridgewater

ESPN NFL Insider John Clayton joined Jeff Thurn on Tuesday’s edition of Overtime.

Thurn asks if the Minnesota Vikings selection to move back into the first round at No. 32 to take Teddy Bridgewater was a smart?

“I think it’s a very smart one because you don’t know how good he is going to be. You knew that he was going to one of the most ready to come into the league. Both he and Johnny Manziel for the most part are the one’s that can make the instant impact as far as doing some things. The way they (Vikings) did it was so much smarter. The fact, instead of using a top-ten pick in a great pick, they were able to go ahead moving from the second round. It’s really only the cost of a fourth-round pick. Now, if he does well, he’s got the fifth-year option to protect them financially and he has the chance to come in, really with some good coaching with Norv Turner (as offensive coordinator). I think that that it’s a good pick and selection, particularly at 32. I just wouldn’t feel good about it taking it in the top fifteen.”

Clayton on general manager Rick Spielman’s job in Minnesota:

“I think he’s done a good job. He seems to still have issues getting the right quarterback that goes back to several franchises. But when you look at what he’s been able to do, he’s drafted well when you look at taking a good left tackle a few years ago, starting to rebuild the defensive line with the draft. It’s starting to look like they didn’t do to well with Sharif Floyd because I think they were seriously looking at (Pittsburgh’s) Aaron Donald had he been available, and not get that trade with Cleveland. You can see that they are building the secondary with Harrison Smith, looks like he has a chance to be a good one. The big key is going to Anthony Barr. I mean thought, a lot of people thought that was a reach at that spot and maybe to a degree it wasn’t, but I thought he was going to go to Tennessee with the 11th pick.”
