June is here, and no doubt there will be a lot of weddings this month.  June is the most popular month of the year to get married.  One warning. Do not let friends and relatives hijack your special day.

Right after you announce your engagement, your well-meaning relatives and friends will unwittingly try to hijack your plans and ruin your day. Here are some great examples.

  • Grandmother may have sent you a nice check as an early gift, but attached the string that she will only come if the ceremony is in a particular church.
  • The aunt that is sensitive to heat and will only show up if there is ample air conditioning.
  • The brother whose wife goes into labor 48 hours before your big day and at the reception all of the relatives are talking about the new baby. Never mind that he missed the rehearsal and dinner and looks like a deer in the headlights as he shows up 10 minutes before the ceremony.
  • Your guests who will ask if your event is kiddie friendly before they RSVP, meaning they are not going to watch their kids.
  • The crazy uncles who show up while the DJ is getting ready with a script you didn't approve for your reception with songs and announcements calculated to embarrass you or your new spouse.
  • The mother who gives the DJ a list of songs you or your spouse hate more than anything in the world and instructs him to play them just because you or your spouse hate them.
  • The control freak best man, acting like he booked and planned the whole event on your behalf by the way he treats everyone you have hired for your event.

These are just a few examples of some real life stories I have heard from numerous couples who have gotten married.  I have encountered some of these people in my business as an entertainer at weddings.

When making your plans, you and your spouse are the most important people.  It is the one day where it is all about you.  Make sure everyone you work with for your big day knows your preferences intimately, right down to the friends and family members to ignore.

Be aware that others will naturally try to make your day their day.
