Denney Shutout Leads USD To Victory
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — South Dakota softball had two hits – both home runs – and that was all they needed as they defeated IUPUI 2-0 at the IUPUI Softball Complex in Indianapolis, Ind. USD pitcher Erica Denney tossed a complete game shutout for the second straight day, scattering four hits and striking out eight.
Katie Dinning and Yvon Minogue hit the two home runs for the Coyotes (21-11, 5-1 SL). Minogue’s homer in the fourth inning opened the scoring while Dinning’s cushioned the USD lead in the sixth.
“We did what we needed to do to win today and win the series,” said head coach Amy Klyse. “Erica had a great performance, and Yvon and Katie came up huge for us at the plate.”
The Jaguars (11-12, 3-3 SL) got runners in scoring position multiple times during the game, but Denney and the ‘Yote defense were able to hold them scoreless in each instance. IUPUI’s Kelsey Rupert led off the game with a triple, but Denney responded by striking out three of the next four batters to strand Rupert at third.
In the second inning IUPUI had runners on second and third with one out, but once again strong defense by the Coyotes were able to stifle the Jag offense as Denney got a groundout and a fly out to end the inning.
The third inning was much the same, as IUPUI’s Ali Mosier opened the inning with a double, but the ‘Yote defense stiffened up to preserve the shutout. The Jaguars didn’t get a runner in scoring position for the remainder of the game.
IUPUI pitcher Jocelyn Oppenhuis had a strong performance in the loss, striking out eight batters and walking two in the complete effort.
The Coyotes’ will have 10 days off before their next game, which will come in a home doubleheader against North Dakota on April 2. The contests will be USD’s first at home this season.
