Demi Lovato was recognized Tuesday by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for her work as a mentor to young adults with mental health and substance use challenges. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius presented Lovato with the award at the National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day in Washington, D.C.

Demi has dealt with her own mental health issues and substance abuse problems. She said "I'm a survivor of mental health and addiction issues and I'm not ashamed." Demi's message for others suffering is "if you ask for help, you will get better."
