A volunteer firefighter in Dell Rapids has lost his position with the department after posting racially charged comments on social media.

John Nygaard was dismissed from the organization after being linked to a series of racial comments on another persons Facebook page.

Nygaard posted the remarks on the page of Paige Shoemaker, a Kansas State University student who came under attack last week for wearing blackface and using racial epithets on Snapchat.

Allegedly Nygaard posted the comments, “Think we should make slaves again” and “[expletive] these people” on Shoemaker’s page.

After reading the comments, a number of people screen-shotted Nygaards remarks and posted them to the Dell Rapids Fire-Rescue Facebook page.

That in turn, caused the Dell Rapids Fire Department to relieve Nygaard of his position with the volunteer organization, and forced them to issue the following statement.

"Dell Rapids fire would like to apologize on behalf of our former member for his insensitive and narrow minded comments on Facebook. This is something we take very seriously and this type of thinking will not be tolerated by our members."

Several residents of Dell Rapids were shocked that a member of their volunteer firefighting force would make such disturbing remarks.
