DEADWOOD - Candidates for mayor of Deadwood got their chance to field questions from residents Tuesday night ahead of next week's election.

KOTA television reports that Jim Vandeneykel and Chuck Turbiville were asked a series of pre-determined questions before the public had a chance to ask questions.

Vandeneykel says he thinks Deadwood is good shape, and it's a matter of evolving the community, its businesses and planning efforts.

Turbiville says the biggest challenge is Main Street, as one whole side of upper Main is empty buildings with rumors swirling about other potential vacancies.

The election is next Tuesday, with voting running from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Deadwood City Hall.

The winner will replace Mayor Francis Toscana, who has served for 12 years.
