It makes dad and mom proud. In some respects it seems like forever, in another way it all happened in the blink of an eye.

Your son or daughter was in kindergarten just last week, and now he or she is graduating from high school. It's a mixture of feelings, from happy and proud to reflective and maybe even just a little bit sad.

But it's time to move on to a new chapter, a chapter titled 'College'.

Oh yeah, and it's time to blow the dust off that wallet or purse, too. As it turns out, higher education isn't free.

Tuition and fees at South Dakota's six public universities is going up. But hold on, it's not going through the proverbial roof.

The increase will average about 3% for the next school year. According to the Associated Press, the average cost of tuition and fees for undergraduate resident students will go up about $256 to roughly $8,870. The increases range from 1.4% at Dakota State to 3.8% at SDSU.

So get as many scholarships as you can (I've read that bunches of scholarships that are available go unclaimed, do some digging!) and best of luck to all our graduates!
