Halloween is not without its hazards. For children trick-or-treating, the emphasis is usually on the child being able to see what they are doing while wearing their chosen costume or being seen by others, especially motorists.

When adults choose their costumes, rarely does the issue of safety come to mind. So consider this your safety tip if you are going to be wearing a costume that includes wearing a pair of those creepy, colored contacts. According to a press release by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) many of those colored contacts being sold either online or at places like Halloween stores, are not real contacts. The ICE is saying they are counterfeit, are not approved by the American Optometric Association and wearing them could actually cause serious eye infections and in the most serious of cases, permanent eye damage.

Representatives from the American Optometric Association say that only an optometrist can determine the proper size of the contacts you should be wearing, and wants to remind those thinking about wearing the creepy Halloween contacts that the wrong size of contacts can actually damage your vision.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does say that the chances of the wearer experiencing more severe side effects such as damaged vision and blindness are not that likely. However last year alone, about one million eye infections were reported due to the store-bought Halloween contacts with about one in every 500 of those being serious enough to result in a more serious condition.

The CDC and ICE encourage consumers to report retailers that may be selling the lenses by calling the Homeland Security Investigations tip line.

When my son, Troy, decided he wanted to get the colored contacts featured in the gallery above "just for fun", I talked to his eye doctor, Dr. Jeannie Dehne. The first thing she did was her research. She found a reputable optometrist that sold the colored contacts, and before she would allow Troy to make his selections, she contacted them and then personally sent his eye-prescription directly to them.

Yes, they were a little more expensive then the contacts that you may be able to purchase at some Halloween stores, but when it comes to your vision, no price should be too high.
