A crash in northern South Dakota claimed the life of a Colton man and left five others seriously injured. It happened Sunday afternoon eight miles west of Bowdle on U.S. Highway 12.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, 45-year old Gwen Faehnrich of Mobridge was driving a 2013 Chevy Equinox west on U.S. Highway 12 when she attempted to pass a semi truck. Her car ended up hitting the 2004 Buick Century driven by 57-year old David Hoffman which was heading east nearly head-on around 4:10 PM Sunday.

David Hoffman was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile three other passengers in the Buick were hurt.  The most seriously injured were 58-year old Ron Hoffman of Sioux Falls and 80 year-old Deloris Hoffman of Colton. Fifty year-old William Hoffman of White Lake, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries.

Faehnrich sustained life threatening injuries. A passenger in the Equinox, 47-year old JoAnn Reff of Aberdeen, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries.

The injured were transported to hospitals in Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, Mobridge, Bowdle and Bismarck. The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the accident.
