The federal government's consumer watchdog group is taking a good, close look at student loan services.

They're searching for ways to help the 40 million or so people currently burdened with student loan debt.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is starting a public inquiry into student loan servicing practices that it feels can make paying back loans stressful, or even harmful.

The federal agency is concerned that borrowers are not always told about repayment plans that could help keep them from defaulting.

Currently, private and federal student loan debt totals more than $1.2 trillion in this country. And approximately 8 million student loan borrowers are currently in default.

If you have a student loan debt story you'd like to share, go to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau website.
