Don't know what to do with leftover food?  Well, there's an app for that - no, seriously, there is.

It came from a simple idea - why waste food?

Leftover swap co-founder Dan Newman says users will be able to post photos of leftovers to donate or barter with strangers and the possibilities are endless.

It could be extra tomatoes that a home gardener has, food from a restaurant, canned food that you're just never going to use.

The app is expected to be available within the next few months, but according to ABC News, federal health officials are already voicing some concern.

If anyone wants to ingest food from a place they're not sure about, they're risking their health.

Currently, there is a federal law that protects people who donate food in good conscious.
