BURNSVILLE, MN — Sioux Falls junior left-hander Noah Coleman (Broomfield, Colo.) was honored as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday for the first time in his career.  The southpaw chalked up two big wins on the mound to lead USF (10-18, 5-9 NSIC) to splits with both Augustana College and Wayne State College.

“I am proud of Coleman,” said sixth year head coach Matt Guiliano. “He has been having trouble in the past with some command issues and not trusting some of his pitches, and has been working extremely hard at getting back to his old form, and gaining that trust back was big hurdle.”

At Augustana on Wednesday, Coleman relieved Henry Ojeda with two outs in the fifth and breezed through the last 3.1 innings. He retired every batter he faced except on an error with two outs in the ninth and notched three strikeouts in USF’s 6-2 nightcap win against the rival Vikings.

After the Wildcats claimed Friday’s opener, 3-2 in eight innings, Coleman evened the series by twirling a complete game five-hitter as the Cougars knocked off Wayne State 5-1 for the Wildcats’ first NSIC defeat of the season. Coleman did not surrender a run until the top of the seventh inning, racked up eight strikeouts and issued three walks.

Opposing hitters went 5-for-37 (.135) against Coleman last week. Of the 161 total pitches Coleman hurled, 104 were strikes and he dealt strikes to 28 of the 42 batters he faced.

A 2011 All-GPAC honorable mention selection, Coleman (3-3, 3.93 ERA) leads USF with 35 strikeouts, which also ranks him eighth in the NSIC. He stands fifth in the league with 15 strikeouts looking.

“Hopefully he can use this week as a turning point in his career and learn from everything that has led up to this point,” Guiliano added. “Knowing Coleman, he will keep progressing and not be satisfied with one weekly individual honor.”

USF is scheduled to travel to Northern State on Wednesday.
