Christmas at the Cathedral: A Different Perspective on Sports

St Joseph Cathedral
St Joseph Cathedral

A disclaimer right off the bat, this article has nothing to do with sports, yet its a perfect fit for a sports site.

As a sports radio host and a sports fanatic just as you probably are, this is a must read.

On Saturday night, I was fortunate enough to be invited along with my wife to the Christmas at the Cathedral program here in Sioux Falls. If you have never attended, make it a point to do so in the future. Great performances, great scenery and overall a great experience.

But that is not the purpose of this article. The purpose is to relay my experience for 3 hours Saturday night and put it into perspective as to what I do for a living.

First of all, my blackberry and me are connected at all time. Last night however, that was not the case, as it was not used for a record 4 hours. No checking scores, reading sports articles or breaking news. Instead, it was a night of spending time with great co-workers, my wife and meeting other tremendous individuals from around the Sioux Empire.

Considering what happened in Connecticut on Friday with the tragedy at the elementary school there, this weekend was already filled with more perspective on my part. Must win games, important headlines, free agent moves and sports stars that are idolized just hasn’t felt the same.

As I mentioned on my show “Overtime” on Friday, sit back and reflect on what is truly important this weekend.

I did just that as I sat in the pew at the Cathedral in downtown Sioux Falls. I reflected on what I do for a living, my family and those that made that night such a success. As I thought about the job I do each and every day, I came up with a few conclusions.

First of all, I do what most sports fans would love to do as a profession. I get to cover sports, interview top athletes, coaches and analysts as well as do a show every single weekday that I love and have a huge passion for.

Secondly, I thought that as much effort as I put into my coverage of sports, that at the end of the day, the real importance of what I do goes much deeper than relaying and interacting on the sports stories of the day.

Instead, it allows for an escape for everyday individuals to leave their hectic lives and have a release in a matter that we call sports radio.

I am blessed to do that here in the Sioux Empire and hope to continue to do so for a long time to come. Sports are great. We cheer, we show passion and we all have fun doing so. I’m not trying to take away at all from what makes them just that. But look at them with perspective.

Friends are important, family is important and on a weekend that we all appreciate those things so much more considering the Connecticut tragedy, I had the opportunity to enjoy both of those things while attending a tremendous performance at the this year’s “Christmas at the Cathedral.”

So as I asked you the listeners on the Friday edition of “Overtime”, I do so again. Call your loved ones and tell them you love them. Hug your spouse and kids one extra time, because folks, Sports are a great release to life, but life, friends and family are what make this world so great!
