For some reason, I have been seeing more and more car crashes around town lately. Three near my home in the past week. One of them left a car stuffed into a bridge railing over the Sioux River.

There have to some common causes of accidents. Is it texting while driving? The answer is yes, but only 12 percent of the time.

The largest percentage of crashes, two thirds of them, are caused by being generally distracted, lost in thought or daydreaming.

The other three main causes involve using devices brought along in the vehicle, eating or drinking and adjusting controls of the vehicle.

A survey by AAA reveals that the average person drives 29.2 miles per day. The average person drives 10,658 miles per year.
