Canaries Sign Ex-Viking Winter

SIOUX FALLS, SD — Former Augustana College baseball star Kye Winter has signed with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.  Winter is the fourth former Viking to lace up the cleats for the Canaries.

Winter becomes the 17th player from Augustana to sign a professional contract to play baseball, and the second this month after former Viking Tony Viger signed with the Lincoln Saltdogs, also of the American Association, on June 12.

The Willow Lake, S.D. native is the ninth player to sign a professional contract under the guidance of Augustana skipper Tim Huber. Winter joins Viger, Jordan Milbrath, Bret Severtson, Nate Baumann, Drew Heithoff, Derek Hansen, Casey Jacobson, and Charlie Dubanoski.

“Just like Tony, Kye has put a lot of work in and this is a deserving opportunity for him,” Augustana head coach Tim Huber said. “Kye has thrown harder in the past but now has really learned how to pitch. He had a great senior year for us.”

Winter displayed his all-around versatility for the Vikings in 2014. He was a Daktronics All-America First Team selection along with Viger. The former Clark High standout was also selected to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Conference First Team as both an outfielder and pitcher, the only player to receive such honors.

Winter had a career year for Augustana this past season. He hit a career-high .365 at the plate, which ranked 18th in the NSIC. Winter also set career highs in runs scored (39), hits (62), doubles (18), RBI (43), and stolen bases (16).

The former Viking also delivered on the mound for Augustana this last year, going a career-best 8-1 as a starting pitcher. Winter posted a 3.81 ERA on the hill, and had a career-high in innings pitched (65.0) and strikeouts (61).

“It is great for our program to add another player to the pro ranks and Kye having a chance to play right in Sioux Falls is a bonus,” Huber said.

Augustana finished the 2014 season with a school-record 41 wins, going 41-16, giving the Vikings its fifth-straight 30-plus win season. Augustana posted a 25-8 in the NSIC, which was good for a second-place finish.

Augustana also captured its first-ever NSIC Conference Tournament Championship with a 4-3 win over Winona State on May 10 at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field, and made its second appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
