It's the latest in a string of far too many killings in schools. By mid-day Friday, one count at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut had 27 dead, 18 of them school children.

School children, who obviously couldn't be safe in their elementary school.

Grieving families, frightened children, countless of us asking, "Why?"

We'll learn more in the coming days about the shooter, a young man whose identity doesn't deserve to be made public.

And the biggest question of all may or may not be answered: Who could do such a thing, and why?

And with far too many events like mass shootings in schools and shopping malls, can we call ourselves a civilized society?
