14 Dead in Mass Shooting in San Bernardino, California

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — The latest on the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California (all times local):

The wife of the couple blamed in the deadly California shootings pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group and the terror group's leader on Facebook using an alias then deleted the messages before the attacks, a U.S. law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Friday.

The remarkable disclosure about the online activities of Tashfeen Malik provided the first significant details suggesting a motive for her participation with her husband, Syed Farook, in the shootings that killed 14 people and wounded 21. Malik was a Pakistani woman who came to the U.S. in 2014 on a fiancee visa before Farook married her in California.

Specifics details about her postings were not disclosed by the law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because this person was not allowed to discuss an ongoing investigation.

In addition, the brother-in-law of one of the attackers in San Bernardino, California, says Syed Farook was a 'bad person,' but he wasn't radical.

Farhan Khan also told NBC News he is beginning the legal process to adopt Farook's 6-month-old daughter, who was dropped off with relatives Wednesday morning before the shooting that left 14 dead. Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, were killed in a shootout with police following their deadly rampage.

In excerpts of the interview released Friday, Khan expressed disbelief that Farook would leave behind his infant girl and said he was angry with Farook for the attack.

UPDATE @ 8:00 AM (DEC. 3): SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities are trying to determine a motive for Wednesday's deadly shootings in San Bernardino, California, which could include workplace violence or terrorism.

Police say a heavily armed man and woman dressed for battle opened fire on a holiday banquet for his co-workers. They killed 14 people and seriously wounding more than a dozen others in a precision assault. Hours later, they died in a shootout with officers.

Wednesday's shooting happened at a social services center for the disabled.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan identified one dead suspect as 28-year-old Syed Rizwan Farook, the other as Tashfeen Malik, 27, his wife or fiancee.

The U.S.-born Farook was a restaurant inspector for the health department. The couple had reportedly dropped off their 6-month-old daughter with relatives Wednesday morning, saying they had a doctor's appointment. The husband of Farook's sister told reporters he last spoke to his brother-in-law about a week ago. He said he was in shock, condemned the violence, and had "absolutely no idea why he would do this."

Federal authorities said the two assault rifles and two handguns used in the violence were purchased legally, but they haven't said how and when they got into the hands of the two shooters.

Police and federal agents are for a second day searching a home in connection to the massacre in San Bernardino, California. A search team combed the residence early Thursday in neighboring Redlands, about 7 miles from the shooting at Inland Regional Center. A black sedan parked outside was also searched.
Federal authorities say that the two assault rifles and two handguns used in the San Bernardino massacre were all purchased legally in the United States — two of them by someone who's now under investigation. Meredith Davis of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives says investigators are now working to make a connection to the last legal purchaser.

UPDATE @ 7:30 PM: According to Chief Jarrod Burgan of the San Bernardino Police Department 2 suspects are dead following a shootout with police. Dead is one male and one female suspect. A third suspect was seen running from the vehicle and is in custody.

According to the chief, following the shooting at the Inland Regional Center, police dispatched an officer to a home in Redlands, California. Upon arrival an officer saw a vehicle leaving the residence matching the description of the suspect vehicle.

A police pursuit followed, leading to a shootout with suspects. One officer was injured in the shootout, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The suspects were dressed in "assault-style" clothing and were armed with assault rifles and handguns.

Authorities are not ready to say that the attack was terrorist-related, but were not willing to rule it out either.

An explosive device was found at the IRC building.

Police are serving a search warrant on a home in Redlands, California, in connection with the deadly shooting at a social services facility in neighboring San Bernardino. City spokesman Carl Baker says Redlands police are assisting San Bernardino police in the search connected to the Wednesday morning shooting that killed at least 14 people and wounded more than a dozen others.
The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health has confirmed that several of its employees were inside a social services facility when gunmen opened fire. The department says on a verified county Twitter account that it's not releasing any more information because of the ongoing investigation and out of respect for the victims.
Gov. Jerry Brown says the shooting at a social services facility in Southern California is a brutal attack. He said in a statement that "California will spare no effort in bringing these killers to justice." The governor was scheduled to light the Capitol Christmas tree Wednesday evening, but his office said the ceremony will be canceled.

Police say shots have been fired and a suspect is down near a dark-colored SUV. It's unclear if the suspect is related to the deadly shooting Wednesday at a social services facility in Southern California. Police have said that the suspects may have fled in a dark SUV. San Bernardino police Sgt. Vicki Cervantes said she knew of no officers who were injured in the shootout. Television footage showed armored vehicles blocking the SUV on a residential street.

Marybeth Feild of the Inland Regional Center was not at the facility but says she is in contact with many employees. She says they told her the shooting happened Wednesday during a banquet for the health department.

Authorities cannot confirm or deny that this was a terrorist incident.

No weapons have been recovered. Several items on the scene were determined to be questionable, but authorities can't confirm that these were IEDs or bombs.

UPDATE @ 3:10 PM: Evan Perez of CNN has said that according to sources on the scene the shooting did NOT take place in the facility for people with developmental disabilities at the Inland Regional Center, but instead took place at an auditorium within the IRC where a banquet was being held. Brandon Hunt, an IRC employee, told CNN that the facility had about 500 employees.

The shooting took place at the Inland Regional Center, a nonprofit that works with individuals with developmental disabilities, at 1365 S. Waterman Avenue. The complex is comprised of three buildings. Sgt. Vicki Cervantes with San Bernardino police said the shooting occurred during some type of scheduled event at the facility.

Lacroix told reporters Wednesday that his son texted him and told him alarms started going off and they got word there was shooting. UPDATE @ 2:30 PM: A source told a CNN reporter that witnesses saw three men with "long rifles" exit the building and get into a black SUV and leave the parking lot. One of the men may have left a suspicious package on the scene. The bomb squad and ATF is investigating the package using a remote device.

Shortly before noon, a number of people were seen exiting the building with their hands up. Marcos Aguilera's wife was in the building when the gunfire erupted. He said a shooter entered the building next to his wife's office and opened fire. "They locked themselves in her office. They seen bodies on the floor," Aguilera said, adding that his wife saw ambulances taking people out of the building on stretchers. Aguilera said his wife was able to get out of the building unharmed.

Terry Pettit told KABC he received a text message from his daughter, telling him that gunman were in her building and that she and some co-workers were hiding. She said there were 10 to 20 people were shot.

UPDATE @ 2:05 PM: Ana Fuentes, manager of a Shell station about a block from the scene told the AP that "there is a flood of police activity in the area." Estimates that there are about 150 police officers flooding the area.
