‘Calendar Girls’ Opens at The Sioux Empire Community Theatre
Calendar Girls opened this week, January 19th to be exact, at The Sioux Empire Community Theatre.
The show runs for three weeks with shows on Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 7 PM, and a matinee on Sunday at 2 PM.
Calendar Girls is based on a true story. It was both a book by Tom Firth and a movie starring Helen Mirren.
The show is described as follows:
When Annie’s husband John dies of leukemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow WI members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. Based on the true story of eleven WI members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund, Calendar Girls opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre and has since become the fastest selling play in British theatre history.
Katie Buchholz, the director, had this to say about the production, “…After numerous reprints, radio interviews, and television appearances, these ladies raised over £3.5 million and the funds continue to grow. Their courage inspired women everywhere and brought light to a disease that generally no one wanted to think about.
This story tonight is for you, the audience and all the people who have all been affected by cancer one way or another. Whether you are a survivor, a spouse, a family member, or a friend, this play is about you and your story. We are so thankful you are here and able to share this performance with us.”
All tickets are $25 and can be purchased in person at The Historic Orpheum Theatre Box office located at 315 N. Phillips Monday through Thursday from 4 PM to 7 PM, online at siouxfallstheatre.com, or by phone at 605-360-4800.
