BROOKINGS - The city of Brookings has agreed to purchase about 7 1/2 acres of land to realign the runway at the city's airport.

The Brookings Register reports that the $157,000 deal was negotiated by the South Dakota Department of Transportation on the city's behalf.

City Manager Jeff Weldon said the rural properties will be annexed by the city on completion of the purchase agreement. He says most of the land costs will be covered by federal funding.

A total of five parcels have been acquired for the runway realignment over the past 13 months.
